The Lang ancestry has been traced back to Niedernberg, Bavaria [now Niedernberg, Kr. Miltenberg, Unterfranken, Bavaria, Germany].  Niedernberg is on the Main River about 25 miles SE of Frankfurt.

The first occurance of the name “Lang” in the Niedernberg records is that of Velten and Anna Lang in 1612.  In 1651 there are listed “Andreaβ Lang”, and “Hans Lang”.  In 1671 is added “Stephl Lang”.  By 1684 “Andreas and Maria Lang” are listed with “2 sons” and “2 daughters”; and “Christopel and Catrina Lang” are listed with “4 sons”.  In 1776 is listed “Peter Lang”.   [1]

The first documented “Lang” family in this genealogy is that of Joseph and Katharina [Klug] Lang who lived in Niedernberg, Bavaria during the middle 1700s.  They had at least one child:   [2]

Philipp, born October 11, 1746.   Died September 6, 1796, at Niedernberg.

- married Margaretha Schmitt, September 21, 1772,                                      Church,

Reinhard Genealogy  [3]

The earliest written record in Neidernberg of the Reinhard name is Hans Reinhardt in the Turkish Tax Register of 1551.  The tax was required in 1530 to help fight the Turks who threatened the area for about 200 years after the fall of Constantinoble in 1453.

The earliest documented ancestor in this genealogy is Jodalkus Rheinhard who lived in Niedernberg, Bavaria, during the middle 1700s.  His wife’s name is unknown.  They had a son named Johann.  Johann Rheinhard married Margaretha Haas on September 27, 1750.  She was born August 8, 1724, Niedernberg, the daughter of Johann Adam and Katharina [Fecher] Haas (their birthdates/places and marriage date/place is unknown).

Johann and Margaretha [Haas] Rheinhard had three children while living in Niedernberg:

Peter Lang died May 27, 1833.  His wife Theresia [Rheinhard/Reinhard] Lang died May 8, 1843.

Heinrich Lang, son of Peter and Theresia [Rheinhard/Reinhard] Lang, was born in Niedernberg, Bavaria, March 4, 1809 (his gravestone reads “geb. 4 Marz 1809”).   [See the Heinrich Lang Ancestor Tree in the Appendix]   He was a shoemaker.  He immigrated to the U.S., departing Le Havre, France (August 10?, 1836) aboard the Bark Potomoc, landing in Baltimore, October 18, 1836 [he is “Henry Lang, age 27” on the passenger list].  He is the only “Lang” on the passenger list.  There were 110 passengers, all from Bavaria.  Next to Henry Lang on the passenger list is the family of Peter (age 44) and Agatha (34) Fecher – Augustina (2), and Anna M. (1/2).  Nearby are Margaretha Fecher (28) and Catharina Klug (24), listed as “spinsters from Schaffenburg [probably Aschaffenburg]”.  Some other surnames listed near Henry Lang are Ruff, Saam, and Clements, and Wolfert.  Many of these families settled at St. Peter, Franklin County, Indiana.

Heinrich/Henry Lang married Catherine Scheurich in Baltimore two days after arrival -- October 20, 1836.  She had also been a passenger on the Bark Potomoc, immigrating with her parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews (all listed as “Sheurig”).  Henry and Catherine were married in St. John German Church; Rev. Louis DeBarg, S.J., officiated.  Married with them in a double wedding were Martin Scheurich (Catherine’s brother) and Catherine Gerlach.  They served as witnesses for each other.  The Scheurich families were from Niedernberg, Bavaria, and Henry and Catherine most likely knew each other there but may not have been allowed to marry.  Bavaria had marriage laws requiring men to have a certain income or own property before marrying.  Perhaps Heinrich’s older brother, Bernard, took over their father’s shoemaker business; and Heinrich had no good source of income.  The phone directory for Niedernberg has listings for “Lang”.

Scheurich Genealogy  [5]

Catherine Scheurich was born about 1812 in Niedernberg, Bavaria [now Niedernberg, Kr. Miltenberg, Unterfranken, Bavaria, Germany].  She was the daughter of John Adam and Barbara [Haas] Scheurich.  This Scheurich genealogy has been traced back to about 1550, and includes the surnames Fäth/Faith, Fecher, Haas, Hartlaub, Hoch, and Morhard/Morhardt/Moret.   [See the Catherine Scheurich Ancestor Tree in the Appendix]   The name “Scheutwerig” [i.e., “Scheurich”] first appears in Niedernberg records in 1692.  There are still many listings for “Scheurich”, and some of these other names, in the Niedernberg telephone directory.

The parents of Catherine Scheurich, John Adam and Barbara [Haas] Scheurich, were married January 20, 1799, in Niedernberg.  They had at least nine children in Niedernberg before immigrating with their family to America aboard the Bark Potomac:  [6]

It is not known where Henry and Catherine [Scheurich] Lang lived immediately after they were married in Baltimore.  Perhaps they went to Jasper, Du Bois County, Indiana, where Catherine’s parents and most of her brothers and sisters settled (some passengers arriving on the Potomac with Henry and Catherine settled at St. Peter, Franklin County, Indiana).  Some documentation has them living in Illinois (town unknown) during the late 1830s and early 1840s.  [7].   They had at least two children while living in Indiana(?) and/or Illinois (Missouri?):

Joseph (Henry)  [8], born                  , 1837/38? (the 1870 Federal Census for Stearns County, Minnesota, lists him as born in “Indiana” and age “28”)   Died May 26, 1875 ("age 39"), Richmond, Munson Twp., Stearns County, Minnesota.  Burial in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Richmond.

[ Joseph Lang married Elizabeth Meyer when she was 16 years old.  They farmed 40 acres near Sherrill, where their first two children were born.  In 1864 they took a steamboat to St. Paul, Minnesota, then to Stearns County, built a log cabin, cleared the land, and homesteaded 160 acres in Munson Township (later Eden Lake Township), Section 10, three miles SW of Richmond.  In 1875, Joseph apparently had a stroke while going home late one evening, and fell from his wagon.  A neighbor, Henry Braegelmann, found him on the road the next morning; but Joseph died later that day. ]

[ Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth Meyer) Lang was born about September/October 20, 1844, at Trier, Prussia [Germany], the daughter of John and Barbara (Engel/Engle?) Meyer, Sr.   John (b. 1813?) and Barbara (b. August 15, 1820) immigrated about 1853 with their children -- Barbara (b. November 20, 1840; Mrs. Cladius Weber), John P. (b. October 20, 1842; Catherine Lemm), Elizabeth (b. October 20, 1844; Mrs. Joseph Lang), and Jacob (b. April 5, 1848; Julianna Meyer, Mary                ).  One or two children are thought to have died and been buried at sea.  They family came to Sherrill’s Mount, Dubuque County, Iowa, and settled on 40 acres of land.  There Margaret (b. January 15, 1854; Mrs. Anton Frank), Catherine (b. April 26, 1856; Mrs. John Braegelmann), Peter (b. January 16, 1861; Catherine Winter), and Nicholas (b, January 28, 1863; Margarey Fredrick) were born.  They lived on a farm next to the Henry Lang farm.  About 1863 Joseph and Barbara Meyer moved their family to Stearns County, Munson Township, Section 34.  [9]

Berg Genealogy

Gertrude Berg was born June 6, 1912, at Dubuque, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Frank J. Berg, Sr., and Mary [Oeth] Berg, married September 1, 1886, at Sacred Heart Church, Dubuque, Iowa.

Frank J. Berg's parents were Leonard and Margaret [Reinfried] Berg.  Leonard Berg was born April 14, 1823, at Bensheim, Hesse-Darmstadt [now Bensheim, Kr. Bergstraße (Heppenheim), Hesse, Germany].  His parents were Johann Berg and Maria Anna [Ritzert] Berg.  Johann Berg was born September 22, 1777, at Fehlheim, Hesse-Darmstadt [now Fehlheim, Kr. Bergstraße (Heppenheim), Hesse, Germany].  Fehlheim is just north of Bensheim.  Maria Anna Ritzert was born June 23, 1786, at Fehlheim.  They were married February 29, 1808, Bensheim (There is no church in Fehlheim).  Johann and his family emigrated from Bensheim to Butler County, Pennsylvania, about 1834.

The Berg ancestry has been traced back to Ober-Hambach, Hesse-Darmstadt, in the 1700s; and to Weschnitz/Fürth, Hesse-Darmstadt, in the 1600s.  Surnames related to this ancestry include Arzberger, Braun, Haffner, Ritzert, Schroeder, Treusch, and Wagner.  [31]    [See the Leonard Berg Ancestor Tree in the Appendix]   [32]

Bensheim is a very old town on the Bergstraße, a main route used by the Romans.  The Bergstraße runs north and south along the foothills between the Rhine River to the west and the Odenwald (Oden Forest) to the east.  This area was devastated during the 30 Years War (1618-1648), and all the citizens were wiped out.  Before the war there were 16 houses in Fehlheim; in 1641 there were five.  In succeeding years, immigrants re-populated this area.  The Berg family immigrated to Fehlheim from Ober-Hambach and Weschnitz, Hesse-Darmstadt.  These towns are in the Odenwald, east-southeast of Fehlheim and Bensheim.  [33]

Leonard Berg, son of Johannes and Maria Anna [Ritzert] Berg, came to the U.S. about 1834 at age 11 with his father, and lived in Butler County, Pennsylvania.  He came to Dubuque in the spring of 1844(?), and began working in a bakery.  He was a baker by trade.

In 1850 Leonard went to California (Gold Rush of '49?) for about 18 months.  After returning to Dubuque he married Margaret Reinfried, daughter of Xavier and Margaret [Wunderle] Reinfried, on November 14, 1852, in Sacred Heart? Church.

Reinfried Genealogy

Margaret Reinfried came to Dubuque in 1835 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her parents, Xavier and Margaret [Wunderle] Reinfried.  She was only an infant, having been baptized at St. Patrick Church, Strip District, Pittsburgh, on July 26, 1835 (sponsors: Georg Wunderle and Margaret Wunderle).

Wunderle Genealogy

Margaret Wunderle was probably born in Hesse-Darmstadt [now Hesse, Germany] about September(?) 1814/15(?).  [43]  She may have been born at or near Gernsheim, Hesse-Darmstadt.  [44]The names of her parents are not known nor whether she had any brothers or sisters.  [45]  It is not known when she immigrated to the United States.   [See the Margaret Wunderle Ancestor Tree in the Appendix]   According to her obituary:

[She] was a native of Germany, and came west at an early day, reaching St. Louis in 1830.  In 1832 she removed to the then small and insignificant village of Dubuque, and has remained here ever since.

Xavier Reinfried immigrated to America in 1831, when he was 18 years old.  His brother Gregor also immigrated but it is not known when.  Xavier lived four years in Pittsburgh before coming to Dubuque in 1835. [47]   At his death the Dubuque Herald, January 5, 1869, wrote:

Another early settler has departed.  Scarcely three hundred of the thousand who made the village of Dubuque, thirty-five years ago, have remained in Iowa or have lived to see the little village of "Dubuque's Mines" become a city of 25,000 inhabitants.  Among those who came to Dubuque before the permanent settlement was two years old, was Xavier Reinfried, then of the age of twenty-two.  He was one of the first German immigrants who began in that early day to make permanent homes in what has since become the State of Iowa.  At that time the whole region north of Missouri and of Illinois was part of Michigan territory, and while Mr. Reinfried resided in Dubuque he was for two years a citizen of Wisconsin territory, and eight years a citizen of Iowa territory before it became a state.  Though dying at the moderate age of only fifty-six, he lived to see railroads extend from the eastern coast to his adopted home west of the Mississippi, and by connections, extend over 1,200 miles further westward.  He lived to see steam ferry boats take the place of the canoe for crossing the river, and even the ferry boats give way, for the pur*pose of commerce, to an iron railroad bridge, over which 1,260 freight cars passed in the first week of its operation.

He became a member of the Early Settler's Association in 1865, and, for that reason the members will do his memory honor.  Mr. Reinfried was born in the city of Schwazag [sic], in the Duchy of Baden, in Germany, in 1813 [sic].  At the age of eighteen he emigrated [sic] to the United States and stopped awhile at Pittsburg [sic], Penn.  Hearing the fame of the Dubuque lead mines he came here to try his fortune, in a place where few knew his language and with little means to establish himself in business.  He had in his native land learned the art of the tailor, and his first employment in Dubuque was that of making men appear better dressed.  But he soon saw that more money could be made in that early day of pioneers in selling groceries than by the use of shears, needle and thread, (for that was before the days of sewing machines;) and he accordingly opened a store on what is now Main street, and in a few years made money enough, properly invested in real estate, to make him comfortable for life.

Mr. Reinfried has done but little business except to collect his rents and enjoy the pleasure of seeing his real estate rapidly increase in value.

In his first year in Dubuque he had no German companionship except Mr. Heigel and five or six others.  But thousands of Germans followed him and now about one-fourth of our city population are Germans or of German descent, and hundreds of them, like Mr. Reinfried, are prosperous in business, and as highly esteemed for their enterprise as he when he kept a store on the site of the present bookstore of Grosvenor & Harger.  The same propetty now belongs to his estate.

He leaves a widow and eight children.  His children are nearly all grown up to be men and women, and his only other relative in Dubuque is a brother, Mr. Gregor Reinfried.

According to Josiah Conzett:

The brick house and store next [731 Clay St.] was built about the same time [1856-1857] as the Pier’s by Mr. Mangold.  It was the saloon and residence of Mr. Berg.  Here Chas. Schreiber was a bartender up to 1856, when he went to John McClay, then on Main St.  He, a few years after, married one of the Xavier girls who was then quite wealthy.  Her money enabled him to buy an interest in the business.   (p. 30)
