Christmas 1991
David is still at the U. of Michigan working toward his Ph.D. in computer science specializing in artificial intelligence and robotics. He only has his dissertation to finish, before graduating next year. He has no idea what kind of job he will take, and is just watching and waiting to see what develops. David took a little vacation this summer by flying out to Bozeman, Montana. He has a friend in the computer science department at Montana State U.; and they did some hiking and fishing in the Rockies, including Yellowstone. David keeps in good shape working out with weights and running road races.
Suzie is in her last year of law school (corporate law) at the U. of Wisconsin -- Madison. During tax time she works part-time for an accounting firm; and last summer she worked as a law intern. This fall semester she worked as a research assistant for one of her law professors. Right now she is interviewing for jobs in Madison. She and her husband Jerry, who is an architectural draftsman, would like to stay in Madison. Because she passed her CPA exams last year, Sue is interviewing for both law and accounting positions; but she is leaning more toward accounting -- a better class of people, she says. Sue and Jerry finally took their honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean this past January.
Steve, you may remember, went to graduate school in aerospace engineering at UC-San Diego. However, he didn't like engineering courses, or the congestion and pollution of Southern California. He is now back at UW-Eau Claire taking computer science and astronomy courses, and applying to Midwest graduate schools in astronomy. He is working as a teaching assistant in the Math Department, lab assistant in the Physics/Astronomy Department, helping a computer science professor analyze NASA photographs, and volunteering as "assistant coach" for the cross-country team. He is still running as much as ever, and won $100 in a half-marathon recently.
Nancy is a senior in audiology here at UW-Stevens Point, and is applying to graduate schools to study for her master’s degree in audiology. Right now she is taking practicum courses working with children who have communicative disorders. She also runs on the cross country and track teams. Nancy lives on her own in an apartment with another girl, works as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant, and gets around town on her Yamaha moped. Last summer she took her first airline trip -- to San Francisco -- to visit Dan's brother, Leon, and his family. Her cousins showed her all the sights: from Los Angeles and Disneyland in the south to the redwoods in the north.
Peter is a junior at UW-Madison, still majoring in music (French horn). He plays in many campus groups, and hopes to play in a major symphony orchestra some day. This spring he gave his first recital, and got very high praise from is teacher. He also attended a horn conference/workshop in the Great Smokey Mountain region of Tennessee. Peter stayed in Madison this summer, picking up a few bucks here and there playing his horn. Among other "gigs", he played in the summer musical South Pacific -- taking advantage of the free food served at the cast parties following each performance. Peter is also very interested in astronomy, taking advanced math and astronomy courses along with his music. He also keeps up his running, occasionally winning half-marathon races in his age group.
Sarah is a sophomore at UM-Minneapolis, majoring in psychology, minoring in French. She works as a maid on weekends in the University Hospitals to support herself. Last summer, while living at home, she was a night custodian here at the University. Sarah is also a runner, last spring she won a road race in Minneapolis and received a free one-year membership to a health club.
Betsy is in her junior year in high school. Betsy is a "tradition-breaker"; she does not run cross-country or track, although she has talent along those lines. Last summer she got her first job -- as a maid for Comfort Suites Motel. Her very first day she met Terry Porter of the Portland Trailblazers (he graduated from UW-Stevens Point, and was back for a visit). Betsy follows pro basketball very closely, and this was a big thrill for her. She is very active socially: French Club, Yearbook Staff, Band (clarinet), etc. She took a band trip to St. Louis last spring.
Katy started high school this fall, and got a 4.00 her first report card. It will be interesting to see what she does with her life. She ran as the only freshman on the cross-country team, which took first place in the state. The girls' team has won the State Championship for the past eight years, so Suzie, Nancy, Sarah, and Katy have all been on State Championship teams. Stevens Point is the "Running Capital" of Wisconsin. Maybe you have heard of Suzy Favor Hamilton -- watch for her in the '92 Olympics. Katy is also in French Club, Yearbook Staff, and Band (saxophone).
Tony is in seventh grade, running cross-country and track, playing basketball, and playing trumpet in band. During the summer he participated in Little League Baseball and was also on a soccer team. He works out regularly with weights, and dreams of being a professional basketball player. If he doesn't make the NBA, he plans on being a private detective like MacGyver on TV.
