Brief Autobiographical Statement

I am an Associate Professor of Psychology at UWSP. I primarily teach courses in social psychology, statistics, research methods, and cultural psychology. My research interests are in the psychology of fairness, statistical methods, and the psychology of teaching and learning.

After attending the University of Wisconsin Marathon County, I received my undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I received both my Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

I arrived at UWSP in 2001. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and was tenured in 2008.

Professional Interests

I am broadly interested in three areas: 1) the psychology of justice and fairness, 2) research on teaching, learning, and student views, and 3) statistics and research methodology. Of course, these interests are not mutually exclusive; in fact, most of my work spans more than one of these categories!

Social and Cultural Psychology

I am most interested with peoples' beliefs about what is fair, just, or proper (and what is NOT fair, just, or proper). Most broadly, concerns about justice and fairness have been shown to not equally apply to everyone - what's fair for one person is not fair for another. Thus, studies in this area have addressed concerns about how we judge other people (e.g., instructors) and how we determine what actions are most appropriate in the treatment of others (e.g., terrorists).

My primary involvement in Cultural Psychology has been in cross-cultural interpretations of data on married couples. Other interests in this area have developed as a result of teaching a course on Psychology and Culture; thus, I have becomed interested in factors that promote the development and maintenance of cultures.

Psychology of Teaching and Learning

I am also interested in the application of social and organizational psychology to the study of teaching and other college-related issues. To name but a few topics: students' perceptions of and beliefs about appropriate classroom behavior, impact of teaching behaviors and grading on student evaluations of teaching, characteristics of "newer" generations of college students, and rumor spread among college students (esp. as pertaining to instructors),

Statistics and Research Methodology

I am also interested in the development and application of quantitative (statistical and measurement) practices within psychology. To date, projects have involved the application of structural equation modeling and multilevel models and the use of confidence intervals and effect sizes

Teaching Responsibilities

Each semester, I teach some subset of courses from the following list. Note that not all classes are offered every semester, nor am I the only faculty member who teaches some of these classes.
