During the Spring Semester of each year, usually in April, the Psychology Department holds its annual awards program and banquet. During this program several events of importance to students take place. The Psi Chi Honor Society holds an initiation ceremony, new officers of the Psychology Club are announced and the department presents leadership/service awards, merit awards, and a scholarship. Some of these awards are then posted on plaques which hang in the department area. Click on the names of the awards to see a virtual view of these plaques.
Leadership/Service Awards The following is a list of awards for leadership (a certificate for performance outside the strictly academic domain): To establish eligibility for all department Leadership Awards, the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) in psychology courses is 3.0, and the minimum overall GPA is 2.75. Criteria for these awards are primarily concerned with activities that demonstrate leadership. This includes activities such as participation in student organizations, attendance at conferences, service in the department, university or community, overcoming handicaps (such as many non-traditional students do), work on research or independent study projects with faculty members, etc. Typically, there are five awards at each level.
Merit Awards The following is a list of awards for merit (a certificate for academic performance): To establish eligibility for all department Merit Awards, the minimum GPA in psychology courses is 3.3, and the minimum overall GPA is 3.2. The top 5 students at each of the junior and senior levels (ranked by psychology GPA) are recipients of Junior and Senior Merit Awards. This includes the winners of the Beck and Harris Awards, who also receive the Merit Award at their level. Names of the individuals receiving these three awards are engraved on plaques for display in the department area and a certificate and check are presented to each recipient. The banquet is open to all faculty, students, and alumni and is typically well attended. Students selected for the Junior Leadership and Merit Awards in the spring of their junior year are automatically submitted as the department's nominees for "Who's Who in American College and University Students" in the fall of their senior year.
