Reading Questions for “Relativism”

 

As you read the section on Relativism, use the following questions to guide you. You won’t be asked to turn in your answers to these questions, but these questions, or questions very similar to them, may appear on a quiz – and you will be allowed to use your notes, including your answers to these questions, on the quiz.

 

1. According to cultural relativism, what makes an action right or wrong?

2. According to cultural relativism, do different cultures have different moral codes or are there certain moral truths which hold for all cultures?

3. According to cultural relativism, if different cultures have different moral codes, are some of these codes better, or more “ethically advanced,” than the others? Why or why not?

4. According to cultural relativism, can we correctly criticize the moral code of another culture? Why or why not?

5. According to cultural relativism, can we correctly criticize the moral cold of our own culture? Why or why not?
