Reading Questions for Mill

 

As you read the section on Mill, use the following questions to guide you. You won’t be asked to turn in your answers to these questions, but these questions, or questions very similar to them, may appear on a quiz – and you will be allowed to use your notes, including your answers to these questions, on the quiz.

  

1. Was Mill a utilitarian?

2. Did Mill, like Bentham, think that we can’t distinguish between better and worse quality pleasures?

3. If Mill did agree with Bentham and thought that we can’t distinguish between better and worse quality pleasures, what argument does he give for this position? If Mill didn’t agree with Bentham, and thought that we can distinguish between better and worse quality pleasures, how would he have us determine which of two pleasures is the highest quality?

4. What does “elitism” mean? Do you think that Mill is elitist?
