Most permanent Classified positions at UWSP require an application and an examination to measure your qualifications. Depending on the type of job, the exam may be a written multiple choice Civil Service exam, a rating of training and experience (Objective Inventory Questionnaire), a performance test, or some combination of these or other types of exams.  Application requirements vary for different jobs.  Each job listed in the WiscJobs Bulletin includes specific application instructions.

Information on UWSP vacancies and current Civil Service exams being given that may be used to fill vacancies on our campus is available by calling 346-2606 from a touch-tone phone and choosing option "1" or on the UWSP Personnel Services website, www.uwsp.edu/personnel/jobs/openings.htm.

Civil Service Exams

For jobs requiring a multiple choice exam, report to an exam location on the date listed in the WiscJobs Bulletin.  The exams are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month, beginning at 8:30 a.m.  There is no charge to take an exam.  You may take more than one exam, but you must complete all exams in the allotted four hours.  An "Application for State Employment" must be completed and taken with you to the exam site.

The exam centers closest to Stevens Point are at the Wausau Technical College and the Wisconsin Rapids Technical College.

Examinations may be given on a statewide basis or for a specific geographic area.   Each announcement in the WiscJobs Bulletin lists the areas where vacancies are anticipated.  Statewide exams create registers that will be used to fill vacancies throughout the state for the six to twelve months following the exam. You will only be considered for jobs in the locations where you state you will work (question #15 on the application.)  Do not write in an area unless you are sure you will accept a job there.

You will receive a Notice of Examination Results several weeks after your exam.  For each classification, a list of applicants who pass the exam and are eligible to be interviewed will be created.  Only applicants who score the highest may be interviewed or receive further consideration.

Your exam score is valid for six months from the date of your exam.  You may take the exam when it is offered again after six months.  If the same exam is offered within six months from your last exam date, you cannot take the exam.  If this happens, however, you can request to reuse your original score for six more months.  I f you reuse your score, it will be valid for six months from the register date listed on the new Notice that you will receive several weeks after your request.  This notice will show your reused score along with your current rank on the employment list.  To request reuse of a score, send in a completed "Application for State Employment" with the REUSE box checked (top right hand corner.)

Custodian Positions

Applications for Custodian vacancies are accepted at any time.  There is no test for these positions.  Complete the "Application for State Employment" and return it to Personnel Services.  All applications received are sent to Madison approximately twice a year to be ranked by a computer-generated random-numbering process.  Applicants will be notified by mail of their rankings and will remain eligible for vacancies for six months.  To continue eligibility after the six months, you must reapply.

Wiscjobs Bulletin

The WiscJobs Bulletin, is published approximately 34 times per year and lists all job openings in Wisconsin State Government and in some local governments.  It also lists the scheduled State Civil Service examinations, as well as the procedures for applying to take examinations.

The WiscJobs Bulletin is posted in Personnel Services, various locations around UWSP, at Job Service Offices, many public libraries, and in college and technical school placement offices.
