Biography

Dr. Gerard (Gerry) J. F. Ring is Professor and Chair of Paper Science at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. He teaches Paper Machine Operations, Paper and Fiber Physics, Colloid and Papermaking Chemistry, and Industrial Thermodynamics. He has authored articles on gel permeation chromatography, cellulose biosynthesis, fiber-length analysis, and paper and paperboard grades. He has been awarded three patents on superabsorbant technology and is the editor of John Swanson's "The Chemistry of Papermaking Materials".

A member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), he is presently serving on the TAPPI Board of Directors. He was also chairman of Lake States TAPPI.

Dr. Ring was a 1992 Wisconsin Teaching Fellow and has been listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers four times. He is the author of the award winning PaperQuest videotapes on the various paper properties. His current research interests involve fiber-length analysis and paper formation. He has had five years industrial experience with Kimberly-Clark corporation and has had several internships with International Paper and Westvaco. Dr. Ring holds a B.S. degree in Chemistry/Biology from the State University of New York at Albany, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Institute of Paper Chemistry.

Abstract:
Measuring the percentage composition of individual pulps in a blended furnish usually involves tedious fiber counting techniques. Furnishes with two components can use an optical fiber-length analyzer. This paper presents a general mathematical techniques for expressing the fiber length averages of distributions obtained this way. This technique permits the derivation of accurate mathematical relationships between pulp component percentages and all fiber length averages-arithmetic, length-weighted, or weigh-weighted. The derived relations also have use with three or more components.
Applications:
A mathematical technique allows calculation of instantaneous pulp component percentages of rapidly changing pulp blends with on-line fiber length analyzers.
