UWSP's Yockers "Facilitator of the Year"

A University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professor was recently recognized as "Wisconsin's Facilitator of the Year" in the field of environmental education.

Dennis Yockers, associate professor in the human dimensions of resource management and environmental education specialist for Wisconsin's Center for Environmental Education, was recognized recently at the 1998 annual conference of the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education.

"Dennis has been a leader in statewide environmental education programs Project WILD and Project Learning Tree since their beginning in the early 1980s," said Al Stenstrup, education outreach coordinator for Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources. "Over 15 years later, Yockers is still providing valuable leadership by training new facilitators, teachers, students, and reviewing new curriculum materials and field testing new environmental education programs."

Yockers was the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' WILD/PLT state coordinator for over eight years prior to joining the faculty in 1994. Both Project WILD and Project Learning Tree are national/international environmental education programs that are used throughout Wisconsin. Project Learning Tree is a program for pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Project WILD focuses on wildlife and habitat and has application for grades K-12.

A native of New Jersey, Yockers received his bachelor's in environmental science from Cook College, Rutgers University. He earned his environmental studies master's at Montclair State University and his doctorate in fisheries and wildlife, with an emphasis in environmental education, at Michigan State University.
