UWSP urban forestry students receive safety and production training

Ten urban forestry students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will receive $8,000 worth of free training and equipment from a professional arborists group.

Collegiate ArborMaster Training, a safety and production training program designed for urban forestry students, will take place at UWSP on Sept. 21& 22 and Oct. 19 & 20.

The training program was developed from an existing one designed for professionals. It’s creators are Ken Palmer and Rip Tompkins of ArborMaster Training, Inc.; Steve Wood from Husqvarna Forest and Garden; and Tim Walsh, of UWSP’s Student Society of Arboriculture and owner of First Choice Tree Service.

The program is free of charge for the students, but is worth an estimated $800 of training per individual with the total value to UWSP, including equipment donations and student training, of approximately $8,000. The training is co-sponsored by Vermeer, Samson, Sherill, and Buckingham; companies that supply equipment to professionals.

The training is offered to a limited number of students who attend colleges recognized as Branches of the Student Society of Arboriculture (SSA). The SSA, founded in 1981 at UIWSP, is a professional affiliate of the International Society of Arboriculture.
