UWSP’s American Chemical Society student chapter receives national acclaim

The American Chemical Society (ACS) student chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has received special recognition as a "commendable" chapter for its activities during the 1997-98 academic year.

"I am very proud of our chemistry students that are involved in our student chapter," said Donald Showalter, professor of chemistry and adviser for the ACS chapter.

Last year’s chapter officers included president Jenny Seymour, a senior from West Bend, 636 James Court, majoring in biology; vice president Craig Zificsak, a 1998 UWSP graduate from Plover with a degree in chemistry; secretary Karl Olm, a senior from Marshfield, 2307 Pecan Parkway, majoring in soil science; treasurer Gretchen Gorte, a 1998 graduate from UWSP from Manitowoc with a degree in chemistry; and social chair Danielle Luisier, a junior from Manitowoc, 4403 Fleetwood Drive, majoring in chemistry.

The American Chemical Society furthers professional development of students in the chemical sciences by offering undergraduate students majoring in chemistry or a related science the opportunity to be involved in ACS Student Affiliates program. Nine hundred chapters with more than 9,000 students participate throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. UWSP’s chapter, like all local chapters, is required to submit an annual report of its activities and accomplishments. The society’s committee on education reviews each annual report and then makes determinations for recognition as outstanding, commendable, or honorable mention honors.

Some of the chapter’s activities included Saturday morning programs for middle school students and parents in Stevens Point, chemistry demonstrations during National Chemistry Week at CenterPoint Marketplace, and guest lecturers such as Thomas Zamis, associate professor of chemistry at UWSP.

A leader in chemistry education nationally, Showalter first joined UWSP’s chemistry faculty in 1971. A native of Louisville, he received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky. In 1994 he was one of two top teachers of the year chosen from among 7,500 educators in the University of Wisconsin System. Showalter is one of the founders of UWSP’s Center for Faculty Development and is past recipient of ACS’s Central Wisconsin Outstanding Contribution to Chemistry Award.
