UWSP music faculty member awarded for original works

Charles Rochester Young, associate professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has received his fourth consecutive award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for the "unique prestige value of his original works and their recent performances."

Young has had a busy summer. In May, his "Fanfare to the Northern Sky" was premiered by the Green Bay Civic Symphony under the direction of Patrick Miles, a professor of music at UWSP. The work was favorably reviewed by the Green Bay Press Gazette and later was one of two works performed by the Madison Symphony during the State of Wisconsin sesquicentennial celebration on May 29 at the state capitol.

Young's recent work for wind band, "Tempered Steel," received accolades during performances at the Music Educators National Convention in Phoenix, Ariz., Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, the University of Minnesota, where Young served as a guest composer, and at other band festivals during the summer. "Tempered Steel" was recently published by Southern Music and placed on the Texas Contest List. It was also released as the title track of a compact disc recorded by the Texas A&M University Symphonic Band.

During June, Young served as a reader and consultant for the AP Music Theory Examination sponsored by the Educational Testing Service and the College Board. He was a presenter at the ED-MEDIA 98 Convention in Freiburg, Germany, as one of five music-related presentations selected from an international pool of applicants. During July, he presented a workshop, Music Education and Technology, for UW-Extension and also served as a technology consultant to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Music Department.

Recently Young was asked to serve as state chair for music technology for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and to serve on the executive board of the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers. Young's invited article, "Multitrack Cassette Recording: An Assessment Tool that You and Your Students Cannot Afford to be Without," will be published in the fall issue of the Wisconsin School Musician magazine, the official journal of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.
