Paper Science Foundation elects officers and recognizes outstanding students

The Paper Science Foundation, an organization that supports the paper science program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has given $56,000 in annual scholarships to new and continuing students at its annual meeting.

The foundation also elected new officers and board members. Officers include President David Krommenacker, vice president of Consolidated Papers, Inc., Wisconsin Rapids, and one of the original 1972 graduates of UWSP’s paper science program; Vice President Dannis Shaffer, business development manager at Hercules, Inc., Green Bay; Treasurer Thomas Howatt, senior vice president, Print and Writing Group, Wausau-Mosinee Paper Corp., Wausau; and Secretary Larry Graham, chair of UWSP’s Department of Paper Science.

The new board members, elected for three-year terms, are: Scott Capper, manager of Pulp and Power Production, Georgia Pacific, Corp., Port Edwards; Phil Martini, president, C.R. Meyer & Sons Co., Oshkosh; Bob Mauszycki, executive director of corporate sales, Buckman Lab, Inc., Memphis, Tenn.; Bruce Stowe, technical manager, Albany International Corp., Appleton; Mike Theiler, vice president and mill manager, Weyerhaeuser Co., Rothschild, and Shaffer.

"UWSP graduates are recognized widely throughout the paper industry for the excellence of their preparation and ability to contribute," said outgoing President Charlie Stahr, technical support service manager at Gaylord Container Corp., Bogalusa, La. He commended Graham and the paper science faculty for the creative way in which the recently installed paper machine has been assimilated into the program. Instead of dealing with hypothetical situations, the students are now able to experience professional papermaking first hand.

Eleven students from Stevens Point were recognized for their academic excellence, including Matthew Ceplina, Melissa Fletcher, Dustin Leder, Stephanie Sorenson, Brandon Flees, Katherine Groshek, Jason Hintz, Jay Olsen, Joseph Sevenich, Melissa Stanislawski and Fredrick Zurawski.
