The book is a comparative historical analysis of Boston, Mass., and Oakland, Calif., water resource management issues at the turn of the century.

Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Assistant Professor of Music Carl Johengen competed in the final round of the artist division at the National Opera Association’s 44th annual Convention in New York. He also was invited to perform at the conference recital for the 1999 National Association of Teachers of Singing Eastern Region Conference at the State University of New York at Potsdam.
Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) A new course, organized and taught by Tom Johnson, professor of anthropology, will provide an insider’s perspective on African American, Hmong and Native American cultures in Wisconsin. The idea for the course was conceived at the Chancellor’s Diversity Think Tank. John Noel, president of the Noel Group and his wife, Patty, gave $7,000 to help televise "Ethnic Diversity in Wisconsin," for broadcast on area cable access stations.

Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Professor of Mathematics George Kung and Ken Vicchiollo, director of computing for the Berlin School District, have received a U.S. patent on their invention—a balance used as a teaching tool in classrooms throughout the country.
Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) An invitation by guest artist Robert Spencer to donate money to Operation Bootstrap prompted audience members at last year’s production of "A Christmas Carol" to donate nearly $6,000 to the local food pantry program.

The collaboration provides electronic transfer of financial aid funds from the corporation directly to student accounts at the university.

Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Lavern N. Van Dyke and Nancy Steiner Van Dyke, both 1941 graduates, have established a charitable trust worth $100,000 with the UWSP Foundation to benefit the men’s football and basketball programs at UWSP.

Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Jennifer Paar of Verona, a junior technical theatre and design major at UWSP, earned an honorable mention at the American College Theatre Festival Costume Design Competition in Indianapolis, Ind. She was recognized for her outstanding designs for UWSP’s production of "Lend Me a Tenor."
Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Susan Reetz of Rothschild, a UWSP alumna, captured a Bronze World Medal at the New York International Film and Video Festival. She was cited in the guidance and counseling category for her video, "Gangs…Broken Promises."

The pieces are "Fanfare to the Northern Sky," commissioned and premiered by the Green Bay Civic Symphony for the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial celebration, and "Northern Lights," composed for the Wausau Symphony Orchestra’s 100th anniversary.
Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Conservationists from around the world gathered at UWSP to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. The conference was sponsored by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in cooperation with the Wisconsin Chapter of The Wildlife Society and the Aldo Leopold Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology.
Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) Students living on the second floor of Watson Residence Hall named their "house" in honor of retired educators Arthur and Virginia Kemp Fish. Arthur headed the government documents section at the library and Virginia taught sociology for 20 years.

Picture (20x20, 160 bytes) The State Building Commission designated funding up to $500,000 for planning and design of the proposed $21.5 million addition to the Fine Arts Center. The commission also earmarked $7.43 million for construction in the next biennium.
