Conservation Biology Minor
Consists of 25-28 credits.

  1. Required core courses, 13 cr: Biology 305; 355 or Forestry 332; Natural Resources 458 or Wildlife 458; Natural Resources 459, 491.
  2. Economics, policy, and planning, 6 cr:
  1. NRES 372 or Econ 342.
  2. One course from Poli Sci 304, NRES 473, 474, 480, 484, 495.
  1. Biological support, 6-9 cr:
  1. Plant taxonomy: one course from Biology 342, 344, 345, 347, Forestry 232.
  2. Animal taxonomy: one course from Biology 361, 372, 374, 376, 377, 378, Water 387, Forestry 426.
  3. Principles and techniques: one course from Biology 210, 311, Wildlife 353, 451, Forestry 324, 325, 332, 385, 432, Soils 361, 365, 461, Water 481, 493, Geography 476.

Definition:  Ethnobotany, a combination of many disciplines but mainly biology and anthropology, is the study of plant use by various cultures for medicine, food, religious rituals, construction, tools, clothing, art, hunting, etc.  Its importance has increased as natural habitats have decreased, threatening plants and the traditional knowledge of their uses.

The minor consists of a minimum of 26 credits including:

  1. Anthropology 101 or 110.
  2. One course from Anthropology 335, 339, 345.
  3. Anthropology 380.
  4. One course from Anthropology 320, English 392, Philosophy 380, Religious Studies 316.
  5. Biology 130, 342, 353, 399 (Field Work in Ethnobotany).

Environmental Communication Minor
Open only to majors within the College of Natural Resources. Others may request permission from the CNR assoc dean for academic affairs. It consists of 26 credits:

  1. Required core courses, 11 credits: NRES 320, 368, 369.

  2. Fifteen credits: 3-6 credits from Comm 240, 280; 9-12 credits from Comm 252, 322, 330, 342, 361, 365, 391, 394; English 354; Instructional Resources 331, 332.

Environmental Education/Interpretation Minor
Consists of 27 credits. Open only to natural resources majors (other than resource management) and biology majors. Others may request special permission from the CNR assoc dean for academic affairs.

  1. Required courses, 24 credits: NRES 301, 302, 368, 369, 374, 376, 478. If you are not a CNR major, you must also take NRES 150.

  2. Electives: 3-6 credits from field courses selected in consultation with the coordinator of the minor.

Environmental Educ. Minor for Elementary and Middle School
Open only to students who are seeking teacher certification. Consists of at least 24 credits from the following:

  1. Environmental education core: Natural Resources 370, 376, 478.
  2. Environmental science core, up to 14 credits.
    Take one course from at least three of the four areas below:
  1. Biology 101
  2. Chemistry 100 or 101.
  3. Physics 101.
  4. Geography 101.
  1. Electives: Biology 305, Philosophy 380, other courses approved by advisor.
Enrollment caps are in effect for those seeking teacher certification. Please contact the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education early for entrance requirements and application procedures. Environmental Law/Enforcement Minor
Complete one track:

  1. Environmental law enforcement (warden) track, 24 credits: NRES 440, 473, 320 (or Comm 230), Sociology 230 and NRES 393 that consists of 12 credits from a 400-hour recruit training program offered by a state technical college and certified by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

  2. Environmental law track, 21 credits: NRES 440, 473, 320 (or Comm 320); Philosophy 315 or 380; Poli Sci 212 and 304; Sociology 230.
