Faculty
members of the division participate in research related to their areas of
academic interest. In addition, each member is involved in professional
development activities through active memberships in professional societies
and associations and community agencies.
To
further enhance your career preparation when you major or minor in business
administration, economics or managerial accounting, we encourage you to expand
your classroom work through active participation in student and professional
clubs, societies, associations, and volunteer work related to your area of
study. We also encourage business
administration majors, and others with permission, to participate in
internships for experience in actual business environments.
The
Division of Business and Economics will make every effort to notify current
and prospective majors of new program standards.
The technique of notification will depend on the nature of the program
change and may include e-mail, Web pages, orientation sessions, the department
advising office, faculty advisors, the catalog, and letters to students.

Business Administration Enrollment
Requirements
You must declare your intent to
pursue a major in business administration prior to completing 18 credits in
the major. If you have completed more than 18 credits of coursework required
for the Business major without declaring the major you will not be allowed
to declare the major. Once declared, you will be advised through the
Division of Business & Economics either in a group or with one-on-one
advising. In order to receive a business
administration major, you must successfully complete the following:

Complete Math 109, 111 or
120; Econ 210; any of Acct 210, Econ 211, Bus 320 or 330 with 2.5 cumulative
in-major GPA or better. At this point you may apply to become a pre-major.

As a pre-major, complete
the remaining required foundation courses (listed below) with a 2.5
cumulative in-major GPA or better. At this point you will be accepted into
the major. (See Academic Standards from the Division of Business & Economics
for more information on GPA requirements).

As a major, complete all
core courses and electives (listed below) with a 2.5 cumulative in-major GPA
or better.
-
You will be dropped from
the business administration major if your cumulative in-major GPA is less
than 2.5 after two consecutive semesters. See Academic Standards from the
Division of Business & Economics for more information on GPA requirements).
Once dropped from the Business Administration major, you will not be allowed
to re-declare this major.

If you are a transfer
student, grades you earned at another campus are included in these
requirements and in your cumulative in-major GPA calculation. You will have
two semesters after your arrival on campus to raise your GPA to DBE
standards.
-
You may petition the DBE
chair if you do not meet these standards.
Business Administration
Major
Consists of 46 credits in the following
categories:
-
Foundation,
25 credits to be completed in sequence BEFORE you take any
additional 300-400 level courses including “core” courses.
-
One calculus course: Math 109 or 111 or
120.
-
Bus 320 and 330.
-
Econ 210 (GDR:SS1) and Acct 210.
-
Econ 211 (GDR:SS1) and Acct 211 or 320. (Acct 211
may be waived if your are a dual business admin/accounting major).
-
Math 355 or any equivalent statistics
course.
-
Core, 12 credits: Bus 340,
350, 360, 370. (We recommend you take at least 3 of these before Bus
480.)
-
Electives, ANY 6
credits in 300-400 level courses not including Bus 490, 497, 498, 499.
We recommend that you take multiple courses in one interest area to
develop higher levels of expertise.
Classes taken as part of an internal area of concentration will
satisfy this requirement (Finance, Insurance and Real Estate,
Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, International Business).

Capstone course,
3 credits:
Bus 480 taken. during your final semester with instructor approval.
You may take only one core business course in conjunction with 480.
Students will concentrations in Entrepreneurship will substitute BUS
421 Advanced Entrepreneurship.

Outside minor, or outside major, or area of concentration:
In addition to required courses for the major, you must complete ONE
of the following: (1), outside minor, (2) second major, (3) area of
concentration (of not less than 18 credits that have been approved by
the Division of Business and Economics). For internal areas of
concentration, at least 15 of the credits must be courses designated
Business and at least 18 of the credits must be designated
Accounting, Business, or Economics. If you wish to complete an
additional area of concentration, you must complete at least 15
unique additional credits in the additional area of concentration.
Note: you MAY include the
economics major and minor and the managerial accounting major and
minor, but NOT the business administration minor for this requirement.

(Prereq for these Comm courses is 240 which satisfies GDR:SS2
requirement); Psych 345 (Prereq is 110 which satisfies GDR:SS1
requirement).

Marketing: 24
credits:
1) Required: Bus 331, 337, 338.
2) 15 credits: Bus 335, 336, 339, 493, 496; Econ 330, 340;
Comm 336.

Entrepreneurship:
24 credits:
1) Required: Bus 321, 331, 421; Econ 272.
2) 12 credits: Acct 330 (Pre/Coreq 310), 331 (Prereq 330); Bus

1) Required: Bus 327, 357, and an international experience
selected from 493, 496, or other approved international experience.
2) 15 credits: Bus 339, 342, 390, 496; Econ 362, 365; Geog
325, 327, 328; Poli 388; Foreign Language Courses numbered above 200
(Limited to 2 classes in the same foreign language). (Language
placement does not satisfy this requirement).

Foreign
Language: Cross-cultural experience
for students planning to work in international or multicultural
environments. Emphasizes practical language skills and knowledge of
appropriate cultural forms and behavior.
1) French, 20 credits: French 211-212, 313,
314, 318, and 317 or 340.
2) German, 20 credits: German 211-212, 313,
314, 318, and 317 or 340.
3) Spanish, 20 credits: Spanish 211-212, 313,
314, 318, and 317 or 340.

Wood Products Industry,
18 credits:
1) At least 8 credits from Forestry 370,
428, 429 (at least 6 cr), 499; bus 496, 497, 498, 499 (forest
products subtitle).
2) At least 5 credits from Forestry 232, 322, 335, 381;
Natural Resources 150, 151, 320, 330, 357, 490; Paper Science 101.

Business
Administration Minor
Consists of 24 credits:

210; Econ 210; Bus 320 and 330.

Electives: Minimum of 12 credits
in business administration courses at the 300-400 level not including
Bus 497, 498, 499.
Collaborative
Degree Program with Business Administration Major
University of Wisconsin Colleges in Wausau and Marshfield, have
joined with UW-Stevens Point to offer a bachelor’s degree with a major in
business administration. Students can attend
evening classes on any of the participating campuses. A combination of
distance learning technologies and face-to-face instruction is used to offer
upper level courses. You must have accumulated 30 freshman and sophomore
credits at an accredited college or university to enter the program. For more

Academic Standards for Business and Economics
If you are enrolled in a DBE major you are expected
to have attained that major's GPA standards by the time you have completed
18 credits in said major (2.5 for Accounting or Business and 2.25 for
Economics).

You are expected to maintain reasonable and
satisfactory progress on completing the requirements of the major.
Issues related to reasonable progress will be decided by the department
chair.
-
If you have not attained the required GPA in major by
the time you have completed 18 credits in the major, you will be dropped
from the major and will not be allowed to re-declare that major.
-
If you have completed 18 credits in the major, you are
expected to maintain your grade point in good standing. If your in-major
GPA drops below your major's standard for two consecutive regular
semesters, you will be dropped from the major and will not be allowed to
re-declare that major.
-
If you are dropped from your DBE major, you may appeal
the decision with the DBE Chair.
-
If you switch from one DBE major or minor to another,
only courses applicable to your new program are included in your GPA
calculation in the new major or minor.
-
The University allows you to repeat courses in which
you earn a D1, D, or an F. See the policy on repeating courses in the
Academic Information section
of this catalog. However, you can repeat no more than three courses for
credit in any of the Division of Business & Economics majors or minors.
-
Courses taken as pass/fail will not count toward any
DBE major or minor.
Academic Standards for Business
Administration
To graduate with a major or minor in business
administration, you must have successfully completed all required courses in
the major or minor. You must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average in
all major/minor required courses. See

Economics repeat policy.
Courses in business administration are open
to all students who meet the prerequisites.
