Archaeology series continues discussion of new findings in archaeology

The series, "New Findings in Archaeology," continues at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Sponsored by the Central Wisconsin Archaeology Center, the programs will offer an opportunity to hear whats new in Midwest archaeology, especially in the state of Wisconsin. The presentations in Room 125 University Center are open to the public without charge. Refreshments will be provided and there will be opportunity to chat informally with the speakers after the presentations.

Constance Arzigian of the Mississippi Valley Archaeological Center (MVAC) at UW-La Crosse, will discuss "Wisconsins First Farmers: Woodland Gardens and Oneota Horticulture." Arzigian has served as director of the MVAC Laboratory since 1988.  She has participated in numerous archaeological projects in the Upper Mississippi Valley, including dissertation research on subsistence strategies for Woodland populations in the Prairie du Chien area. This work involved several seasons of excavation at stratified Woodland period sites on islands in the River, and extensive flotation and analysis of plant remains for subsistence and environmental interpretations.  Her major research interests are the analysis of prehistoric plant remains and the reconstruction of environment and subsistence patterns in the prehistoric upper Midwest; she has also published on the evolution of prehistoric horticultural systems in Woodland and Oneota cultures.
