Jazz hornist to perform at UWSP

A guess recital by jazz horn artist Arkady Shilkloper will be presented Wednesday,
Jan. 26, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Shilkloper will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Concert Hall of the UWSP Noel Fine Arts Center, accompanied by bassist Catalin Rotaru, UWSP professor of music, and drummer Ryan Korb, an associate lecturer at UWSP. The performance is open to the public without charge.

The UWSP visit is part of a concert tour of U.S. universities arranged by Patrick Miles, UWSP professor of horn. While on campus, Shilkloper also will present the improvisation workshop "Freedom in Music" at 4 p.m., prior to the concert on Wednesday.

Called an "artistic sensation" by Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather, Shilkloper attracts attention and critical praise throughout the world. Feather wrote, "His control of the instrument and his blowing creativity have set a new standard . . ."

A native of Moscow, Russia, Shilkloper studied at the Moscow Military Music Academy before becoming a member of the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre and the Bolshoi Brass Quintet. With this ensemble and as a member of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, he undertook numerous worldwide concert tours. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Shilkloper has worked independently as a solo performer and in a duo with pianist Misha Alperin, and since 1991, with Alperin and Sergei Starostin in the Moscow Art Trio. In 1994 he played with Lionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Lew Soloff and Herb Ellis at a music festival in Moscow, Idaho. He also participates in international projects and records as a guest musician with groups including the Vienna Art Orchestra.

Shilkloper has performed at leading jazz festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival. Since 1998 the Boheme Music label has released eight of Shilkloper's compact disc recordings, including his two solo CDs, "Hornology" and "Pilatus."

Shilkloper's visit to UWSP is made possible by grants from the Office of the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music, with additional contributions from the UWSP horn studio.
