Acting Company to present Shakespearean comedy

The Tony Award-honored Acting Company will stage William Shakespeares "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" on Tuesday, Feb. 22, as part of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Points Performing Arts Series.

The comedy, a riotous romp about the bonds of friendship and fidelity, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in Sentry Theatre, 1800 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Tickets for the Major Arts Attraction production are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, $6.50 for youths, and $4 for students with UWSP ID, who will be admitted free the day of the show if seats are available. Tickets may be purchased at the University Box Office in Room 103 of the University Center, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets also may be ordered by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378. Major credit cards are accepted.

Shakespeare uses brilliant language and ingenious plot twists to unravel the convolutions of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona." Crazy clowns, baffled bandits, sassy servants and an unforgettable ill-mannered dog provide a backdrop for best friends Valentine and Proteus. The complications arise when Proteus becomes enamored of Valentines girlfriend, the captivating Sylvia, while forsaking his own beloved Julia.

"The Two Gentlemen of Verona" continues The Acting Companys 31-year commitment to producing the work of the worlds greatest playwright and is presented in touring repertory with Henry Jamess "The Turn of the Screw," adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.

The Acting Company has performed more than 100 plays for audiences in the United States, London, Australia, Russia and Eastern Europe. Troupe members also have given master classes, student matinees and artists residencies for tens of thousands of students. The company was founded in 1972 by John Houseman and Margot Harley, current producing artistic director. Alumni members include Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone and David Schramm.

The Acting Company has been honored with the Obie Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, Citibanks Excellence in Education Award, two Audelco awards and a 2003 TONY Honoring Excellence in Theater.
