Campus photographer recognized at competition
Tom Charlesworth, photographer at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), placed second in the "personal vision" and "sports" categories of the University Photographers Association Fourth Annual Web Image Competition.
The competition was organized by the University Photographers Association of America (UPAA) with entries judged at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. The competition gave campus photographers throughout Canada and the United States a chance to show their skills in scanning, color management and PhotoShop computer skills.
Charlesworth entered a digital image in all six categories. The four other competitive categories were people, environment and landscape, news and features, and science and research. Any UPAA member in good standing could submit a maximum of six entries, one for each category, used in a Web site during the past 18 months. The organizations chair, Chris Hughes of the University of Waterloo, appointed independent judges for the competition.
Charlesworths photo in the "personal vision" category was of a hibiscus flower. A UWSP baseball player about to be beaned by the baseball in a game last spring placed in the "sports" category. Information about the contestants and their photos can be found on UPAAs Web site at
www.upaa.org/test/2001_web_image_winners.htm.A Stevens Point native, Charlesworth came to UWSP in 1999. Previously he was chief photographer at the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune and a staff photographer at the Stevens Point Journal. He has been honored by the Wisconsin News Photographers Association and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, as well as receiving first place honors in the science category of the UPAA slide contest last summer. A founding member of the Stevens Point Focal Point Camera Club, he currently is its vice president. He is a 1987 alumnus of UWSP.
