UW-Stevens Point sponsors annual peace march for unity
The third annual University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point "Peace march for unity" will take place on Wednesday, April 19. Participants will begin to rally at noon at the Sundial for the walk through parts of the campus and the community.
Chancellor Tom George will greet the marchers at 1:15 p.m. at the Sundial just prior to the march.
Community members and area business representatives are welcome to join.
Three years ago a couple of racial incidents on campus galvanized students and the community to march for unity. The events caused concerned students to organize a united front to combat cultural ignorance and discrimination.
Sponsored by Multicultural Affairs, the Black Student Union, the Student Government Association and the Noel Group, the march is an effort to promote cultural diversity in Central Wisconsin and society as a whole. Organizers expect the event to end at approximately 3 p.m. at the Sundial. At that time, music, poetry readings and a cookout will conclude the event. All proceeds from the cookout will be donated to flood victims of Mozambique, Africa.
