Worlds largest trivia contest April 19-21at UW-Stevens Point

Trivia on 90FM WWSP, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Points student radio station, will turn the community into the Trivia Capital of the World on the weekend of April 19-21.

For the 33rd consecutive year, about 12,000 players from around the state, the nation and the world will play Trivia, some who have participated since the games beginning in 1969. This years theme is "All in the Contest," a tribute to Carol OConnor from the TV series "All in the Family." The contest runs for 54 hours of non-stop action beginning Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. and ending Sunday, April 21 at midnight.

Eight questions are asked over 90FM WWSP each hour. Team contestants have the length of two songs in which to call in their answer to the question. Each team is allowed only one call and only one answer for each question. All teams that respond correctly are given an equal share of the 2000-point total that questions are worth, with a minimum of five points and a maximum of 500 points.

The first Trivia contest was held in November 1969. The questions were written by players and read over the air for the other teams to answer. The contest was 16 hours long and 16 teams with about 70 members participated. The contest was changed in 1970 when 90FM WWSP staff took over the task of writing questions. Trivia continued to grow in popularity and in 1974 it became a 56-hour contest. The next year it was shortened to 54 hours with each hour containing eight questions.

In 1979 Jim Oliva, owner of a local computer store and former schoolteacher, took over writing the questions for Trivia. The contest today includes more than the weekend itself. Players drag out their notebooks and take notes during the Trivia movie and go all out designing team floats for the Trivia Parade held at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The Trivia Kickoff Movie will play at midnight on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at Rogers Campus Cinema in Stevens Point. Doors will open at 11:15 p.m. The movie is "Amelie."

To register a team, a member must sign up personally in advance at the 90FM Studios. Registration is Monday through Thursday, April 15-18 from 3-7 p.m. and Friday, April 19, from noon to 6 p.m. The fee is $30 per team. All proceeds go to the general maintenance of 90FM WWSP.
