UWSP students’ earnings hit $1 million mark

Part-time employment in Portage County has added up for students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). By the end of this fiscal year (June 30), students will have earned an estimated $1 million through off-campus jobs they found through the Student Involvement and Employment Office (SIEO).

"Our QUEST job posting system is free for area businesses and individuals," said Emily Lindahl, job fair coordinator at SIEO. "Employers who hire UWSP students report back to us with wages, hours and dates of employment so that we can keep an estimate of students’ earnings."

Current UWSP students can view job listings on QUEST, an online job search database that can be accessed from SIEO’s Web site at www.uwsp.edu/centers/sieo. Employers can post a free job listing by going to SIEO’s Web site or calling (715) 346-2174.

According to Lindahl, the Stevens Point YMCA recently reported the one-millionth dollar earned by SIEO-placed students. SIEO presented the business with a large novelty thank-you check and balloons last week.

According to YMCA director of human resources, Roz Fesenfeld, "Student employment is a win/win for both the campus and the community. We have access to a tremendous employee resource, and the students secure employment that is flexible, easily accessible, and for most, provides experience in their field of study."

Community members can also post jobs on QUEST. Ten percent of students’ earnings come from one-time, temporary, or occasional jobs such as babysitting, yard work, tutoring, and labor positions.
