UW-Stevens Points Young given national recognition
Susan Young, manager of the Student Employment Office (SEO) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, was one of two people recognized by the National Association of Student Employment Administrators. Young and Sharon Welsh of Rutgers University were given the Presidents Award at the organization's national meeting in San Diego.
Young was recognized by the association for her "outstanding work as a coordinator of the program committee for the annual meeting." The group commended her for meeting the demands of the position for the past two years. "She has given us an extraordinary amount of time and effort to produce conferences that offer a variety of opportunities to help people succeed in their jobs," according to the commendation.
Since Young was appointed UWSP's SEO manager in 1996, many improvements have occurred in the program. For example, she helped coordinate the campus first ever Job Fair, an event that has grown from 100 student participants the first year to more than 1,100 last year.
"I view SEOs mission as helping students locate meaningful work while they attend college," said Young. "While these jobs help supplement the students' financial situations, the participants also develop critical skills that will improve their talents in the workforce after graduation."
Young has shared her enthusiasm and expertise in many venues including four year's service as chair of the Portage County Business Councils Communivercity Committee. She has served on the UWSP Faculty Senate, as well as volunteered for United Way of Portage County.
Prior to joining UWSP, Young was a substance abuse prevention adviser at Iowa State University. She holds a bachelors degree from Millikin University, Decatur, Ill., and a masters from UW-Whitewater.
