Pointer one of five in the nation recognized for her volunteer work post Hurricane Rita

Stevens Point native and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) sophomore, Katrina Mijal, is a winner of a national grant to participate in an alternative spring break program.

Mijal is one of five winners of the AlterEdu Alternative Spring Break Competition, developed by Outside the Classroom. Each winner received $1,000 to cover travel expenses.

This week during spring break, Mijal is participating in her second trip to the Gulf Coast with the United Way’s Alternative Spring Break program and their efforts to help clean up the Gulf Coast and the aftermath of Hurricane Rita. She is helping residents of Biloxi, Mississippi, continue to clean up after the hurricane.

Majoring in sociology at UWSP, Mijal is a 2006 graduate of SPASH and resides at 1624 Burgundy Lane. She is the break trip coordinator for UWSP’s Student Involvement and Employment Office.

Outside The Classroom is a Boston-based company that was founded to address epidemic-level public health issues affecting education, corporate and government institutions. The company's mission is to deliver tangible results to its customers by providing measurable reductions in the negative consequences associated with these health issues.
