UW Stevens Point’s Hettler and colleagues honored for work with YMCA

Dr. Bill Hettler, director of Health Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, accepted the national "Volunteerism Award" on behalf of the YMCA of the USA's Medical Advisory Committee at the national organization's recent annual meeting in Chicago.

YMCA of the USA is the national office overseeing 2,200 YMCAs throughout the United States and Hettler is the longest serving member (20 years) of its medical advisory committee, The committee is a volunteer body that makes medical policy recommendations for the national organization. Convening once or twice a year, the group makes recommendations on a variety of medical issues including AIDS prevention, pool safety and a multitude of other subjects that directly impact health and safety issues in YMCAs across the country.

"The committee’s role is to set down policies and guidelines that will greatly reduce medical, health and related liability issues at each and every YMCA, including our own fine facility here in Stevens Point," said Hettler. "I am honored to accept this award on behalf of our chair, Dr. James Skinner and the other committee members."

The criteria for the prestigious volunteerism award are meaningful service to the YMCA, extraordinary dedication and a clear demonstration of initiative, effectiveness and innovation in meeting the needs of the YMCA and community.

A nationally known health and wellness expert, Hettler is a co-founder of the National Wellness Institute, as well as past president of the National Fitness Leaders Association. He came to UWSP in 1972 and has been the director of health services since 1977. A native of Ohio, he received his bachelor’s from Mount Union College and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Prior to joining UWSP, Hettler served as a general practitioner in the U.S. Air Force.
