Hastings receives grant to support new works for piano and saxophone

David Hastings, professor of saxophone, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), has been awarded a $1,500 grant from UWSPs University Personnel Development Committee (UPDC) to commission two new works for saxophone and piano.

According to Hastings, part of the UPDC research monies will be used to support the commissioning of composers John Harmon and Ed Sarath. Harmon and Sarath will each compose a piece applicable for both saxophone and piano, with a focus on incorporating the use of improvisation. "There will be an opportunity for me to premier this music at the upcoming XIII World Saxophone Congress in July 2003," said Hastings.

Hastings grant will help defer the production costs for both compositions. UPDC grants are awarded three times a year for research, renewal and development projects. Grants range from $300 - $10,000 and the money is available for one calendar year from the time the project is selected.

Hastings has music degrees from Northwestern University where his principal studies were with Frederick Hemke. His performance credits include two world saxophone conferences, the 14th International Saxophone Symposium in Washington, D.C., the Ingesund Workshop in Sweden, and numerous university and public school appearances.
