Wausau native named George C. Marshall Award winner
Darek Huckbody, 3406 N. 73rd Street, Wausau, has been named the George C. Marshall Award recipient at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The annual recognition is presented to the most outstanding cadet in the Army ROTC program at UWSP and is named in honor of Army General George C. Marshall. Marshall served as chief of staff of the Army and secretary of both the Departments of Defense and State during the Truman Administration. The architect of the famous "Marshall Plan" which helped restore a post WWII Europe, he was the only career soldier ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
A junior in the College of Letters and Science with a major in political science, Huckbody was selected for his professional experience, leadership, personal integrity and selfless service to the nation. "Darek has set a new standard here at UWSP," said Department of Military Science Chair Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Sliwicki. "This brilliant, young officer consistently exhibits the finest qualities of mature judgment and professional competence. I believe he has unlimited potential and there is no challenge too great for this young man."
Huckbody will join other Marshall Award winners on April 15 in Roanoke, Va., where he and his peers will spend four days in training and attending seminars.
A 1999 graduate of Wausau East High School, he is the son of Jean Cleveland and Douglas Huckbody of Wausau. He will be commissioned in December when he will be assigned a duty station.
