Nations top fire fighting experts attend weeklong session at UW-Stevens Point
This week 65 fire fighting experts from around the United States are attending a weeklong fire management course within the College of Natural Resources (CNR) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP).
According to Bob Rogers, associate dean of the CNR, representatives of the U.S. Forest Service, Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs involved in combating wildland fires are taking the course. "Five of the participants are CNR alums which speaks highly of our college, its faculty and students," said Rogers. "Participants are learning the principles, policies and procedures that will enable them to effectively plan and implement a fire management program within their respective federal agencies."
The course is part of a series of courses developed by the National Advanced Fire and Resource Institute headquartered in Tucson, Ariz. The Institute is a national center for strategic planning, development and implementation of fire, fuels, and incident management skills and educational processes. According to Rogers, many of the instructors are nationally recognized experts in managing wildfires.
