Earth Day events abound at UW-Stevens Point

Picture (300x196, 21.7Kb)Student organizations, the College of Natural Resources and Department of Biology in the College of Letters & Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point have a whole host of activities planned on or around Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.

All of the following Earth Day events are open to the public:

April 21 "Biodiversity Day"

11 a.m. Great Green Macaw presentation

2 p.m. Environmental education roundtable discussion

4 p.m. Leave No Trace Mini-course (at Outdoor EdVentures)
5 p.m. DNR talk on aquatic invasive species
6 p.m. Prairie nursery � "how to"
7 p.m. Biodiversity and native plants of Wisconsin, talk by Emmet Judziewicz, assistant professor of biology

April 22 Earth Day

"Nibi: The Spirit of Water" - A Water Symposium

In addition, there will be an Earth Day information booth all day in the University Center for Earth Day (April 22). Many of the day�s activities will focus on water as Wisconsin has declared 2003 Year of Water. It is also the International Year of Water.

April 25 "Eco-Fair"
Sponsors: UWSP�s Environmental Educators and Naturalists Association and a host of other student groups on campus
Location: UWSP Sundial (10 a.m. � 5 p.m.)
A variety of student groups and organizations will offer food, live music, informational booths, nature poetry readings, a hybrid car on display and much more.

"Turn Down the Heat" conference, sponsored by the University�s Sustainability Committee, a group of students, staff, faculty and administrators, will be held from 6 - 10 p.m. All events will take place at the UWSP Sundial at no cost and open to the public.

Chancellor Thomas George will formally make UWSP a signatory of the international Tallories Declaration of the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF). Last year UWSP�s Student Government Association worked with faculty and administrators to pass both the Tallories Declaration (TD) and establish the University Sustainability Committee (USC).

The keynote speaker for the evening is Native American and 2002 Green Party vice presidential candidate, Winona LaDuke. A.K. Black will follow LaDuke�s address with a rap music performance focusing on the environment. Progressive Magazine Publisher, Matthew Rothschild, will also speak to conference participants. Lastly, Jamaican traditional drummer, Devon Evans, will perform.
