Former governor announces donation to UW-Stevens Point
Lee Sherman Dreyfus, former governor of the state of Wisconsin and former chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has contributed $100,000 to the UWSP Foundation. Dreyfus made the announcement of his gift at a ceremony on the front lawn of Old Main marking his accomplishments as governor and chancellor.
Dreyfus was the ninth president of Wisconsin State University from 1967-1972 and UWSPs first chancellor from 1972-78 following the merger of the state campuses into the UW System. He left his post at UWSP to campaign for governor and was elected Wisconsins 40th chief executive in 1978. Prior to coming to UWSP, Dreyfus was a professor of speech, radio and television at UW-Madison.
"We are honored by the governors generosity and welcome his contribution to the ongoing success of this institution," said Chancellor Tom George. " Whether in the role of former chancellor, regent or governor, Lee continues to contribute generously to the university and to the state."
Under Dreyfus leadership, the campus experienced:
Dreyfus and his wife, Joyce, made the donation to the UWSP Foundation through a charitable remainder trust and a cash gift. Joyce, who completed her degree while her husband served as chancellor, is a 1977 graduate of UWSP and a James H. Albertson Medallion Award recipient. The Albertson is the highest recognition of student achievement at UWSP.
"The Dreyfus gift will have a significant and meaningful impact on this university in perpetuity," said UWSP Foundation Executive Director Bruce Froehlke. "The cash gift makes the Dreyfuses members of the Old Main Society which recognizes people who give $1,000 or more to UWSP without restrictions. This allows the chancellor to determine where the gift will have the most impact. Charitable trusts return income to the donor and provide immediate tax deductions while designating the university as the ultimate beneficiary. The Dreyfuses have set another wonderful example of how to serve this community in many ways including charitable giving," Froehlke said.
"My main goal in giving," Dreyfus said, "is the promotion and development of platform speaking and public address among the student body." Dreyfus has for some time also contributed funding for an "outstanding junior" award in the Division of Communication.
