Student research presented at the College of Natural Resources
An exhibit of research projects by natural resources students will be held in the Daniel O. Trainer Natural Resources Building (TNR) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday, April 11.
The CNR Student Research Symposium 2008, now in its ninth year, will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the first floor of the TNR Building. The event, sponsored by the College of Natural Resources with funding support from UWSP/UWEX Lakes Program and the John R. Meyer Endowment for CNR, is open to the public free of charge. Light refreshments will be available.
The symposium will feature the work of 48 students who have conducted research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors. There will be 21 poster displays and 24 oral presentations covering a broad range of topics, including an urban river survey in South Africa, how temperature affects porcupine den use in Central Wisconsin, biomass potential in Wisconsin by county, controlling Eurasian water milfoil in Springville Pond in Plover, and the effectiveness of roadside barriers at preventing frog and turtle road mortality.
Oral presentations will be held from 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. in rooms 120 and 170 of the TNR Building. Poster presentations will be held from 12:20 – 1:20 p.m. along the southwest corridor on the TNR first floor.
Historically, the event has featured a high level of quality in undergraduate research, and this year’s symposium is characterized by a high level of diversity of student interests, projects and topics. Over 400 students have presented their research at the symposium since its inception in 2000. John Mumm, a junior from Lake Mills majoring in water resources, is student chair of the event.
For more information about the symposium please contact Steve Menzel, CNR development and public relations coordinator, at (715) 346-2032 or smenzel@uwsp.edu.
