SGA Statement on TABOR

TABOR has been reintroduced in the state legislature, threatening once again to devastate the UW System.

With a new name and same detrimental funding plan, Assembly Majority Leader Michael Huebsch said in a release today that TABOR will give "taxpayers a direct voice in their government."

This amendment does just the opposite though, taking control out of the hands of school officials, who know what is best for their students, and putting a cookie-cutter formula in charge of Wisconsins future. One especially dangerous element of the proposal is that tuition is not protected under TABORs restrictions for raising revenue, meaning that the cost of education for students will skyrocket, pricing many Wisconsin residents out of an education.

"This is the same amendment that ruined the higher education system in Colorado, and students will not stand by to see the same disaster happen in Wisconsin," said Melissa Cichantek, president of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Student Government Association.

"This is not a bill. It is a constitutional amendment," Cichantek said. "There is no room for error in this process. TABOR will seal into our states highest governing document the downfall of our higher education system."
