UWSP engineering specialist receives award from Governor DoylePicture (186x263, 8.2Kb)

An engineering specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was recognized recently by Governor Jim Doyle at a meeting of the State Building Commission in Madison.

Jerry Walters was identified by the State Division of Facilities Services for his "positive attitude and proactive approach in working with the divisions field staff in the administration of construction projects on the UW-Stevens Point campus."

"The Department of State Facilities (DSF) recommended Jerry for the award because of his outstanding ability to work with a variety of people and his knowledge of construction processes. Jerry manages construction projects in the style that DSF promotes as the example they would like to have in place through out the state," says UWSP Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Greg Diemer.

Walters, who came to UWSP in 1989 as a facilities planning specialist, was employed by residential living as director of facilities from 1991 to 1996, during which time he oversaw renovation of several residence halls and was responsible for custodial and facilities staff. Walters left the university in 1996 to operate a custom cabinet business, returning to UWSP in 1999 as a senior engineering specialist in Facilities Planning and Facilities Services.

Walters has served as the campus construction representative on the $26 million Noel Fine Arts Center (NFAC) addition and remodeling project and served as the states representative for a seven-classroom renovation project. He continues to work on completion of the NFAC, and will lead a five-classroom renovation project, the Central Wisconsin Environmental Sunset Lodge remodeling, and restroom replacement in the Science Building.

"We are pleased to learn that Jerry has been recognized by the governor and the State DSF people for this special award, says Dean of Fine Arts and Communication Gerard McKenna. "It makes good sense because he has worked so hard in so many ways. He has carefully worked around the edges, getting things done so we could use new spaces in the building (NFAC). He even got us some things, while they stretched the plans a bit, that made the rooms more functional. Jerry has an incredible amount of patience and has always been someone you could depend on. We are all honored by his recognition."

Walters has performed similar duties on numerous other projects in recent years including the Learning Resources Center lobby remodeling.
