Tsunami Benefit Concert

A Tsunami Benefit Concert will present a lineup of performers on Sunday, Feb. 13, from 2-9 p.m. when Funky Drummer Love takes the stage at Clark Place, 1009 Clark St., Stevens Point, followed by the Shuvani Dancers, Green Tea, Mark Little, and members of Sloppy Joe.

Admission is $10 for the public and $8 for students.

The event will raise funds for the nonprofit Shama, Inc., the organization that hosts the Festival of India each year in Stevens Point. The proceeds will fund two efforts that Shama, Inc. has developed for Tsunami disaster relief.

The Pavagada Integrated Rural Health facility in Karnataka, directed by Swami Japananda, has adopted two coastal area villages with a need for medical supplies and nursing facilities. The hospital sends volunteer staff in rotation but does not have funds for long-term care of the affected villagers. Shama, Inc. will transfer proceeds to this health facility.

P.N. Doshi College is sending volunteers to Nagapattinam, one of the worst affected areas in Tamil Nadu. Tiruvarur, a town about 22 kilometers from Nagapattinam, is the relief center. The college principals brother-in-law, Kesavan, a Home Guards Major, lives in Tiruvarur. The college sent an advance team of two teachers and two students on Jan.18 to help revive the educational infrastructure. The plan is to identify a school, rebuild it and bring the children back. The volunteer teachers and college students also will teach the children as they have missed many weeks of schooling. They will provide them with books and other supplies. The advance team will identify the exact work that needs to be done. A larger team will depart next week to undertake the project. Each team plans to spend about 15 days there. Shama, Inc. also will direct proceeds to this effort. For more information, please visit www.uwsp.edu/multicultural/SHAMA/. The event is co-sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Office.

The event will include an all-you-can-eat buffet by Rockmans Catering, a raffle, speakers, and educational information on the efforts. Green Tea, one of Wisconsins most progressive Celtic bands, well known for driving melodies, world-beat jams, and heart-felt ballads will host the event. All the performers will donate their time for the benefit.

If you cant attend the concert, make checks payable to Shama, Inc. and send to Trevor Roark, 2117 Church St., Stevens Point, WI 54481 Shama, Inc. is a 501 (3) (c) charitable organization (nonprofit).
