Panel to raise awareness about sustainable development

A panel to raise awareness about sustainable development will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The discussion in the University Center Laird Room is open to the public without charge. It is sponsored by the Environmental Council.

Panelists will include Dean of the College of Natural Resources (CNR), Victor Phillips, discussing the United Nations Johannesburg Summit and his participation in the summit. He also will briefly describe the Global Environmental Management (GEM) project within the CNR.

GEM is a partnership with the National Wildlife Foundation and other universities. Wes Halverson, project manager of UWSP�s Center for Watershed Science and Education, will discuss two recent GEM initiatives.

Saed Engel-Di Mauro, assistant professor of geography, and Tracy Hofer, assistant professor of business and economics, will discuss the United Nations focus on sustainable development incorporating sociological and economic issues.

Lynn Markham, Shoreland Management and Land Use Educator, will talk about living more sustainable with a focus on water.

Panelists will answer questions from the audience at the conclusion of the program.
