Matthew Sherrell, a native of Owatonna, Minn., received the Cornerstone Award, the most prestigious recognition given by the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

A 1998 graduate in natural resources, Sherrell worked at the Glen Canyon Recreation Area in Arizona before returning to UWSP last fall as the director of Watson Residence Hall. During his year as a hall director, he emphasized the significance of academics, appreciation of diversity and the importance of hall government and staff working together.

The Cornerstone Award is based on exceptional contributions to RHA, professionalism, service as a positive role model, being supportive and helpful, demonstrating initiative and motivating others, dependability, reliability and maintaining balance between student and administrative needs.

"Matt was a fine mentor to all of the students that he worked with," says Bob Mosier, UWSP�s director of residential living. "He was selected for the Cornerstone Award because of his excellent work with the NRHH. The recognition is a testimony to his effectiveness in working with and advising students." Sherrell advised the NRHH in place of Julie Zsido, associate director of student development, who was on maternity leave.

Sherrell has rejoined his former staff as a park ranger with law enforcement responsibilities in the Glen Canyon Recreation Area.
