UWSP faculty participate in Teacher/Scholar in Residence Program

Five faculty members at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are completing a semester as the universitys third group of participants in the Teacher/Scholar in Residence Program.

This is the last year of a three-year pilot program to give selected teachers one-quarter release time for a semester to devote to scholarly activity.

Faculty named by their respective deans for UWSPs third year of the program are Joan Karlen of the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC), William Lawlor and Richard Ruppel of the College of Letters and Science (L&S), Earl Spangenberg of the College of Natural Resources (CNR) and Patricia Williams of the College of Professional Studies (CPS).

Karlen, professor of dance, is working with director/choreographer Margarita Bali of Buenos Aires, Argentina, on an interactive, multimedia performance project, "Zoom In, Look Out." Their collaboration began last summer at an Arizona State University workshop, then Karlen spent three weeks in Buenos Aires in December. While in Argentina, Karlen and Bali laid the foundation for a performance work that will be premiered at UWSP next January. Karlen, who came to UWSP in 1988, holds degrees from The Juilliard School and New York University.

Lawlor, a professor of English, has been contracted to edit "An Encyclopedia of Beat Culture," a one-volume A-Z reference on the artists of the Beat Generation, including authors, musicians, painters, dramatists and filmmakers. Encyclopedia entries will also focus on related cultural and historical background. Lawlor will assign and edit articles, write an introduction, prepare a chronology, choose appropriate illustrations and compose some entries for the encyclopedia. He came to UWSP in 1978 and holds degrees from Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York and Ball State University.

Ruppel, a UWSP professor of German and comparative literature since 1985, is continuing ongoing research on Swiss women writers of the last three decades. He seeks to measure the extent to which the literary efforts of female writers, namely Gertrud Leutenegger, Helene Meier, Margrit Schriber and Laure Wyss among others, have raised the political consciousness of their readers and of women in Switzerland. Schriber, who has developed a working relationship with Ruppel, visited UWSP last fall and read from her works. Ruppels research focus on Switzerland also has led to three different books on 19th century Swiss author Gottfried Keller. He holds degrees from Hartwick College, Tufts University and Cornell University.

Spangenberg, professor of forestry and water science, is reviewing, revising and adding up-to-date materials to teaching outlines for three courses, Water Quality Management, Watershed Management and Hydrology. The text and illustrations for two of the courses will be prepared as electronic files and documents also will be made available to students in hard copy format designed to enhance note taking in class. The lecture notes for Water Quality Management will be posted as a web site. Spangenberg, who came to UWSP 31 years ago, holds degrees from Oregon State University and Colorado State University.

Williams, professor of interior architecture, came to UWSP in 1983. She holds degrees from UWSP and the University of Leeds, England. She is developing an illustrated vocabulary on the decorative arts of China, Japan and Korea that have been a dominant influence on western interiors since the 17th century. The work is tied to other ongoing projectsrevision of a UWSP course on non-Western interiors and a UW System collaborative grant to develop course materials for Global Perspectives on Design and Culture. The materials will be used in two UWSP courses from an image database shared with UW-Madison.
