Classical Indian music to be performed

Indian tabla (drum) player Sandip Burman and his sister, Sima Burman, a classical Indian vocalist, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The performance in the University Center Encore is open to the public without charge.

Sandip Burman, who has toured throughout the world for the past decade, is well known not only among Classical Indian musicians, but also in the world of American Jazz. He has shared the stage with Indian luminaries including Ravi Shankar and with a number of famous jazz musicians. Known in India for her vocal talents, Sima Burman arrived in the U.S. this month and is staging her debut tour.

Most recently Sandip Burman has toured and collaborated with Bela Fleck, playing on her Grammy Award winning album, "Outbound." He also has contributed to a number of other projects, including the soundtrack for "Mars Attacks" and an IBM commercial.

The event is sponsored by the departments of music, philosophy, religious studies and anthropology, as well as Multicultural Affairs, and the College of Letters and Science and the College of Fine Arts and Communication.
