Patricia Kluetz elected president of Design Communication Association
A professor of interior architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been elected president of an international professional
design organization.Patricia C. Kluetz,
who has taught in UWSP's Division of Interior Architecture and Department of Art and Design since 1989, was selected to lead the Design Communication Association (DCA) at its recent biennial conference in Tucson, Arizona. Her term of office will be two years. The 600-member interdisciplinary organization is composed of professional designers and design educators from the United States, Canada, and Central and South America. As Kluetz assumes the presidency, she believes the organization is at a turning point in several areas. A decision has been made by its members to rotate the headquarters of the organization to the home bases of its presidents. For that reason, UWSP will house the DCA while under Kluetz's leadership for the next two years. Also, its next biennial conference will be hosted by Clemson University
in January, 2002. For the past 11 years, the DCA has been headquartered at the University of Arizona, which also hosted the international meeting.During her tenure, Kluetz wants to help broaden the organization's membership base and increase its visibility, both nationally and internationally. She foresees the forming of mutually beneficial alliances with lik
e-minded organizations such as the American Association of Architectural Illustrators, and the formalizing of the DCA's organizational and operational procedures.Among the publications of the organization, which sponsors a student competition prior to its conference, are a tri-annual newsletter and a biannual journal.
Currently a full-time faculty member in interior architecture, Kluetz held a joint appointment with art and design and interior architecture for five years. She also served as assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication for two years. She came to UWSP following her first teaching position at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
Kluetz spent her youth in Marshfield where her father was dean of the UW Center-Marshfield. Following her graduation from UW-Stout, she worked for four years in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for one year in San Francisco, California, as a commercial interior designer and space planner. She holds a master's degree from UW-Madison
, and has earned professional status with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).-30-
