American historian invited to Japan
An American historian at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been invited to spend two weeks at Chiba University in Japan this summer.
Associate Professor Theresa Kaminski, a specialist in 20th century
American womens history, will travel in June to the city of Chiba, located
across the bay from Tokyo, to give lectures and seminars at the university and
to consult with students and faculty. Her residency is sponsored by the
Organization of American Historians and the Japanese Association for American
Studies with support from the Japan-United States Friendship Commission.
Each year three American scholars of U.S. history are chosen from several hundred submissions to visit three Japanese universities for two-week residencies. The aim of the program is to contribute to the expansion of personal scholarship networks between the two countries. The award covers round-trip airfare to Japan, housing and expenses.
The author of several articles and book reviews, Kaminski is the author of a book about American Women in the South Pacific during World War II and the editor of the memoir of a WWII medical aide in the Philippines. She currently is writing a biography entitled, "A Woman of the Century: The Life of Ethel Thomas Herold," an American woman whose life spanned almost the entire 20th century.
"Her life provides a window through which we can view both American and world events of the last century, and it serves as a method of examining the social and political forces that affected womens lives," Kaminski says.
Kaminski, who came to UWSP in 1992, received the University Scholar Award in 2001, the same year she was recognized by the Wisconsin Library Association for outstanding achievement. She holds degrees from Rosary College, Illinois State University and the University of Illinois.
