Hmong comedian performs at UWSP

Tou Ger Xiong, the nation�s first Hmong comedian, rap artist and storyteller will perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Admission to the event in the University Center (UC) Laird Room is $5 at the door or through the UWSP Box Office, Room 103A University Center, 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378, or online at https://tickets.uwsp.edu/Wt3/. Sponsors are Centertainment Productions, Hmong and Southeast Asian American Club, and Multicultural Affairs.

Born in Laos and reared in St. Paul, Minn., Xiong graduated first in his class at Humboldt High School and holds a degree in political science from Carleton College. He starred in "Portraits from the Cloth," the first television movie about a Hmong family�s journey from war. He has a rap video documentary and a book entitled "Mission Possible." One of his latest works is a 90-minute one-man show, "I Is Hmong." His works will be available for sale after the program. Recently he was identified as one of the most influential Hmong in America. He resides in St. Paul and is active in community programs, chairing and serving on the board of Hmong American Partnership.

His show, "Teaching Culture Through Laughter," is a one-man performance that combines humor, folklore, movement and rap music to educate about cultural diversity. Xiong takes his audiences on a journey from the jungles of Laos, to the refugee camps of Thailand to the public housing projects of America. He has given more than 1,000 performances throughout the country.
