UWSP Chancellor publishes book
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Chancellor Tom George has co-edited a book entitled "Theoretical Physics 2001," a volume in the series, "Horizons in World Physics," published by Nova Science Publishers (Huntington, New York, 2002). The other co-editor is Henk F. Arnoldus, associate professor of physics at Mississippi State University.
The 16 chapters written by scientists from around the world provide a representative sampling of the latest advances in theoretical physics and address diffraction of light or particles with different types of matter, nuclear thermodynamics and structure, interactions of laser radiation with molecular and chemical systems (George has co-authored a chapter on this with collaborators from Hungary), electronic structure in molecular systems, and new methods of quantum mechanics.
George is professor of chemistry and physics at UWSP and also holds an appointment as adjunct professor of physics at Korea University in Seoul. He received his bachelors degree from Gettysburg College, and masters and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University, followed by postdoctoral work at MIT and UC-Berkeley. His research interests are in the theory of chemical physics and laser-materials interactions.
George has authored/co-authored 590 articles, co-authored two textbooks and edited/co-edited 11 books. One of his co-authored textbooks, "Fundamentals in Chemical Physics," written jointly with a scientist in Italy, was published in 1998 by Kluwer Academic Publishers (The Netherlands). A previous co-edited book, "Computational Studies of New Materials," was published in 1999 by World Scientific (Singapore), and another co-edited book, "Optics of Nanostructured Materials," was published in 2001 by John Wiley & Sons.
George also is an accomplished jazz pianist, playing frequently in public. His CD is entitled "Close Your Eyes: Women Jazz Composers."
