Outstanding student employers and employees honored at UWSP

Outstanding student employers and employees are being honored during Student Employment Week, April 7 11, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Finalists for Student Employee of the Year are Billie Haasl, 1220 13th Ave. S, Wisconsin Rapids, a junior elementary education major and employee of Multicultural Affairs, Sara Hall, 4282 Finup Lane, Wisconsin Rapids, a senior business administration major who works in UWSP Extension, and David Langlois, Elgin, Ill., a senior organizational communication major and employee of Multicultural Affairs.

On-campus Employer of the Year is Sue Beeken of Point Card Office and off-campus Employer of the Year is Michael Houlihan of Portage House.

Beeken was nominated by Kristen Stencil, 464 Old Highway 51, Mosinee, a junior social science major, who says, "I believe Sue tries extremely hard to treat us as more than student workers, and it shows through her care, concern, and respectful nature. She makes it very enjoyable to work at the Point Card Office. She has a very professional and admirable work ethic and I believe that I have gained enormous amounts of skill, professionalism and positive work habits from following Sues example."

Dean Alft, 1740 Lincoln St., Wisconsin Rapids, a junior psychology major, calls Houlihan, "the best boss Ive worked with. His ability to be flexible and motivate people stem from his tremendous knowledge of life and the experiences he has gone through. He is a gentleman and a scholar and has been a boss, mentor and most of all, a friend to me and the other Portage House staff. It is Mikes sense of humor that keeps a lot of meetings going and provides the staff with the almost therapeutic ability to be able to laugh at some of lifes situations."

The winner of Employee of the Year will be announced at the University Leadership Awards ceremony at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, in the University Center Alumni Room.

Haasl, an office assistant, and EXPLORE LEAD counselor, was nominated by Director of Multicultural Affairs Ron Strege, who calls her "a model employee. She cares deeply

about the work she does. She is conscientious and ethical. She is fun and creative. She is a good supervisor and her commitment to the children she works with is awesome to watch."

"I wish time would slow down so she can be with us longer," says Financial Specialist Gerry Garski about Sara Hall. "Sara is graduating this May. Her dedication to her school work and office work show both maturity and professionalism. It will be a difficult task to replace Sara."

Rosario Alemparte and Laurie Graboski-Bauer nominated Langlois, who serves as Multicultural Affairs Lead Peer Mentor. They say he possesses "the unique and rare ability to cross cultural barriers as is demonstrated by his strong relationships with diversity students. Dave has shown a tremendous amount of initiative, coupled with a strong sense of follow-through and responsibility."
