Diversity photo collection introduced at UWSP

A reception to introduce the Diversity Photo Collection will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 8 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The event in the University Center Legacy Room (formerly Wright Lounge) is open to the university community and the public without charge.

Fifty-six photos of ethnic heroes will be displayed at the reception before they are placed in residence halls and classroom buildings. The display is coordinated by Portia Hamlar, director of Equity and Affirmative Action and reception chair is Sharon Cloud, director of the Native American Center. The groups represented include Afro-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Hmong and Native Americans.

Last fall diversity students at UWSP expressed the desire to have photos of ethnic heroes on display in campus building. Names of subjects were solicited from student organizations and photos were sought and framed. Additional funding to implement a second phase of the project will be sought next fall.

"The diversity collection will inspire pride among diversity students and serve as an educational tool for all UWSP students, faculty and staff to learn about other cultures," said Hamlar.
