A former chief deputy sheriff from Iowa is the new director of Protective Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

William C. Rowe, who has been the chief of the Clinton County Sheriff�s Office, Clinton, Iowa, for 13 years, has joined the staff at UWSP. In Iowa he administered a 75-person organization with 32 deputies and a $3 million annual budget. He also assisted the director of countywide communications and 911 services.

Prior to 1990, Rowe was a Clinton County deputy and from 1999 to 2000 served as a public safety consultant to the security director at Mount Saint Claire College. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at Clinton Community College and Mount Saint Clare College.

He holds bachelor�s and master�s degrees from Saint Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa, and has been trained in human resource management, leadership, drug enforcement and intelligence.

Rowe�s family, including wife Laura, six-year-old Madeline, and three-year-old Quinn, recently joined him in Stevens Point. Laura holds a master�s degree in gerontology from Western Illinois.

At UWSP Rowe will serve as chief law enforcement officer in charge of police and security personnel including policy and budget development and monitoring, law enforcement, campus security, crime prevention and staff hiring, training, supervision and evaluation. In addition to departmental administration, he will work with local law enforcement, maintain a mentoring program for students in law enforcement and guest lecture in classes.

One of his priorities since coming to UWSP last month has been working with and supporting the 35-member student patrol. The patrol assists protective services staff by securing parking lots, patrolling buildings and responding to minor calls for service on campus.
