Burroughs receives Carolyn Rolfson Sargis award
A program assistant with 37 years of experience has been honored by her colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with the Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award.
Jane Burroughs, who has worked in several areas at UWSP including the past four years for the Department of Political Science, was chosen for the recognition named for the late Carolyn Rolfson Sargis. Sargis was a UWSP business manager during the tenures of seven UWSP chancellors. The $650 award recognizes classified staff members who epitomize the standards of outstanding and dedicated service and special contributions to the university.
Nominated by Michelle Brophy-Baermann and supported by other members of the political science department, including Department Chair Jianwei Wang, Burroughs has been lauded for her university service and service to the community.
"Without exception, Jane has served the faculty and students in the Political Science Department very well," said Wang. "Thanks to her rich experience, she can handle different tasks and demands from faculty and students with efficiency and creativity. As chair, I think that the department could not function normally without her expertise and service."
Brophy-Baermann said Burroughs is "the glue that holds the department together. Never have I know a person as organized and on top of things as Jane. Faculty types arent the only ones whose lives are made easier by Jane. Students know they can go to her and shell treat them professionally."
"Although her exceptional performance at the university is notable, even more significant for this award is her service to the community," said faculty member Ed Miller.
Burroughs has volunteered in many community organizations from the hospital to environmental groups to United Way. Most recently she spent 10 months as part of the Portage County Leadership Institute and has since served on its curriculum committee and on the United Way allocations committee. She also served as a counselor at Camp Hope, a program for children who have lost a loved one.
Boating, photography and travel are Burroughs avocations. She has visited Florida, where she swam with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center, Australia and New Zealand, where she helped tend to orphaned and wounded koalas, Mexico, Peru, Alaska and Hawaii.
A Stevens Point native, Burroughs has two grown children and three grandchildren.
