UWSP Symphony Orchestra performs at UWSP
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Symphony Orchestra will perform in the Noel Fine Arts Center on Wednesday, March 8.
The event will be held in Michelsen Hall at 7:30 p.m. Part of the Music Department Scholarship Series, admission is $6.75 for the general public, $3.75 for senior citizens, $2.75 for youth and free the day of the concert for students with UWSP ID. Tickets are available at the UWSP Box Office, Room 103A University Center, (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378 or at the door if the concert is not sold out in advance.
The first half of the program will feature Robert Schumanns "Piano Concerto in A minor" for piano and orchestra. Molly Roseman, assistant professor of piano at UWSP will perform on the new Steinway piano purchased with money from private donations to the Department of Music as part of the remodeling of the Noel Fine Arts Center. The event is part of a series of events celebrating the new instrument.
The orchestra will perform the "Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major" by Ludwig van Beethoven. The symphony was originally composed as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte whom Beethoven admired greatly. However when Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France, Beethoven was furious and changed the subtitle of the work to "Eroica" and added the inscription, "composed to celebrate the memory of a great man," referring to the younger, more idealistic Bonaparte.
The performance will be conducted by Patrick Miles, professor of horn and director of orchestral activities at UWSP. He serves as music director for the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and the Green Bay Civic Symphony and appears frequently as a guest conductor for the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra. Miles has performed as principal horn with orchestras in London and Rome as well as numerous solo and chamber appearances in Europe and the U.S. In Wisconsin, he has played principal horn with the Green Bay Symphony, La Crosse Symphony, Fox Valley Symphony, Central Wisconsin Symphony, Wausau Symphony and the Pamiro Opera Company.
Roseman is an active solo and collaborative pianist throughout Wisconsin and has been a featured performer with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, and on Wisconsin Public Radios "Live at the Elvehjem" series. She has performed with the Florida State University Wind Ensemble, the Kansas City Youth Symphony, Atlanta Pro-Mozart Society, Tallahassee Bach Parley, and the Memorial Art Gallery Series in Rochester, New York. Roseman serves as the orchestral pianist for the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. Prior to joining the faculty at UWSP, Roseman taught at Oklahoma Baptist University, Florida State University and the Wausau Conservatory of Music.
