Soul Food Dinner celebrates Black History Month

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Black Student Union will hold the 14th annual Soul Food Dinner, a celebration of Black History Month, on Sunday, February 19.

The event will be held in the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public, $7 for students, $5 for students UWSP ID, and $3 for children ages 12 and under. Tickets are available at the UWSP Box Office, Room 103A University Center, (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378.

The dinner menu will include jambalaya, macaroni and cheese, catfish, collard greens, corn bread, fried chicken, peach cobbler, yams, and Kool-Aid.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by Power of Word, a spoken word group from UW-Milwaukee. The evening also will include a reading by UWSP alumna Nicole Sutton and music by Voices of Worship, the UWSP gospel choir.

A new stamp in the United States Postal Service Black Heritage Stamp Series featuring Hattie McDaniel will be unveiled at the dinner. McDaniel was a black singer and actress made famous by her roles as "Queenie" in the 1936 film "Show Boat" and as "Mammy" in the 1939 film "Gone with the Wind." She was the first African-American to win an Academy Award. McDaniel had a prolific career in both radio and film also appearing on television on several occasions.
