Matthew Sintchak to perform at UW-Stevens Point

Saxophonist Matthew Sintchak will perform in a guest recital at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, March 2.

The event will be held in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center (NFAC) beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $10 for the general public, $6 for senior citizens, and free with a UWSP ID.

Sintchak will be accompanied by Brook Cuden on piano and baritone Johan Lippens. The program, "Dutch-American Crossovers," will include renditions of "Little Zero" by David Dramm, a piece commissioned and premiered by Sintchak and Cuden. "Not Yet" by Roscoe Mitchell was commissioned and premiered by a consortium of 20 saxophonists organized by Sintchak. Other pieces include "Volkslied" by Louis Andriessen, "May This Bliss Never End" by Jacob ter Veldhuis, "Holy Roller" by Libby Larson, and three songs by Kurt Weill, "In diesem Dorfe," "Es regent," and "Speak Low."

Sintchak is a native of New York and has studied at Boston University, the New England Conservatory of Music, the Paris Conservatory, and the Eastman School of Music. An avid supporter of contemporary music, Sintchak has commissioned and premiered music from a wide variety of composers. He has also been involved in traditional saxophone performance as well as several unique performing groups including the Jupiter Saxophone Quartet and the Ancia Saxophone Quartet. After teaching at the University of Iowa, the University of Hartford, Nazareth College, and the Eastman School of Music, Sintchak is now serving as a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Cuden, a graduate of Northwestern University, has performed as a soloist and collaborative artist across the United States and Europe. She has been a member of the faculty at Luther College and the University of Iowa and currently holds a teaching position with a private piano school in Amsterdam.

Lippens, a native of the Netherlands, is an experienced world performer. He made his European debut in 1995 in the concert hall of the Royal Concertgebouw and has performed everything from opera and oratorio to solo recitals from the Netherlands to Japan. During a tour of the Netherlands and England, several of his performances were broadcast nationally by radio and BBC world television.
